BYD Atto 2 - Review

Vehicle Reviews & News

The electric car scene is evolving fast, and BYD—the Chinese EV giant that’s already making waves with models like the Atto 3—is about to launch something smaller but equally intriguing: the BYD Atto 2. This compact electric SUV is aimed at drivers who want style, practicality, and electric efficiency, all without breaking the bank.

Design: Compact but Confident

The Atto 2 is noticeably more compact than its sibling, the Atto 3, but still manages to carry a confident road presence. It’s sharp and modern-looking, with BYD’s signature “Dragon Face” design language giving it a bold front end. Think sleek LED headlights, a sculpted bonnet, and bright detailing that helps it stand out in the crowded small SUV segment.

At just over 4.3 metres long, it's a great fit for urban driving—small enough to zip through tight city streets, yet tall and wide enough to feel like a proper SUV.

Performance: Smooth, Silent, and City-Ready

The Atto 2 is powered by a single front-mounted electric motor producing 177 bhp and 290 Nm of torque. It’s no sports car, but with a 0–62mph time of 7.9 seconds, it’s nippy enough for everyday driving and motorway cruising.

The focus here is comfort and efficiency rather than corner-carving. The suspension is tuned to absorb potholes and rough surfaces, and it handles town driving with ease. It’s the kind of car you can hop into, drive without thinking, and enjoy a smooth, near-silent journey.

Range and Charging: Efficient and Well-Suited to Daily Life

Under the floor, you’ll find a 45.1kWh BYD Blade Battery—a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit known for its safety and longevity. BYD claims a WLTP range of up to 194 miles, which should cover most daily commutes, school runs, and weekend outings without issue.

Charging is relatively straightforward. The Atto 2 supports:

AC charging up to 11kW, which will get you from empty to full in about 5.5 hours using a home wallbox.

DC rapid charging up to 65kW, giving you 10–80% in roughly 37 minutes—perfect for a quick top-up while you grab a coffee.

No, it's not the fastest-charging EV on the market, but it's quick enough for most people's needs.

Interior: Practical, Techy, and Surprisingly Premium

Step inside the Atto 2 and you're greeted with an interior that’s far from budget-basic. BYD has clearly gone for a more premium look and feel here. The seats are finished in vegan leather, and both front seats are heated and electronically adjustable—pretty impressive at this price point.

Taking centre stage is BYD’s now-signature 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen, which can be used in either landscape or portrait mode. It’s a striking bit of kit, with built-in sat nav, voice control, and support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A panoramic sunroof also comes as standard on higher trims, adding an airy, upmarket feel to the cabin.

Boot space comes in at a respectable 400 litres, which should easily handle your weekly shop, a buggy, or a weekend's worth of luggage. Fold down the rear seats and you’re looking at 1,340 litres—not bad at all for a car this size.

Safety and Tech: Designed With Families in Mind

Despite its modest size, the Atto 2 is well-equipped when it comes to safety. Expect features like:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Adaptive cruise control
