The new Volvo EX30 Cargo is now eligible for the UK Government’s Zero Emission Van Grant, reducing the cost of the fully electric compact commercial vehicle by £2,500.

It makes the EX30 Cargo an increasingly interesting option for businesses and fleet operators that need practical load space, but do not necessarily require the size and carrying capacity of a conventional van.

Based on the Volvo EX30 electric SUV, the Cargo takes a slightly different approach to the traditional small van. Volvo has removed the rear seats and replaced them with a dedicated load area, creating a compact two-seat electric commercial vehicle while retaining much of the comfort, technology and safety equipment associated with its passenger cars.

With the grant applied, the Volvo EX30 Cargo is now priced from £33,529 on the road and is available exclusively through Volvo fleet sales channels.

What is the Zero Emission Van Grant?

The Zero Emission Van Grant is designed to help reduce the upfront cost of eligible electric commercial vehicles and support more businesses making the switch away from petrol and diesel vans.

The EX30 Cargo now qualifies for a £2,500 contribution towards its purchase price, helping to make Volvo’s first UK commercial vehicle more accessible to fleets and businesses looking to electrify.

The scheme is separate from the Electric Car Grant available on qualifying passenger vehicles, despite the EX30 Cargo being closely related to Volvo’s standard EX30 SUV.

For businesses comparing electric vans, grants such as this can make a meaningful difference to the initial cost of moving to an electric fleet, particularly when considered alongside potential savings in running costs and taxation.

Who could the Volvo EX30 Cargo suit?

The EX30 Cargo could be particularly well suited to businesses that need to carry smaller amounts of equipment, stock or tools but spend a considerable amount of time on the road.

Service engineers, property professionals, photographers, mobile technicians, sales teams, couriers and businesses transporting smaller equipment could all potentially benefit from a vehicle of this size.

Its compact dimensions could also make it particularly useful in towns and cities, where parking spaces, narrow roads and increasingly congested streets can make operating a larger van more difficult.

For drivers, it also offers a very different environment to many traditional commercial vehicles.

Because the Cargo starts life as an EX30 passenger car, the driving position, interior quality, infotainment and technology are much closer to what many drivers will already be used to in a modern company car.

From electric SUV to compact electric van

Rather than developing a completely new commercial vehicle, Volvo has converted its smallest electric SUV into a car-derived van designed specifically for fleet and business customers.

The rear seats have been removed and replaced with a flat load floor, complete with access to additional storage underneath.

This gives the EX30 Cargo up to 1,000 litres of load capacity and a maximum payload of 390kg.

A specially designed bulkhead separates the cabin from the cargo area, while modified rear side panels and doors have been introduced to maximise the usable load space.

The rear doors also open wider to make loading easier, while an additional cargo-area work light improves visibility when working in darker conditions. An underfloor subframe provides additional securing and mounting points for different commercial uses.

It is not designed to replace a larger van for businesses regularly carrying bulky or heavy equipment, but that is arguably part of its appeal.

For businesses where a conventional van is simply more vehicle than they need, the EX30 Cargo offers something more compact and car-like without losing the flexibility of a dedicated commercial load area.

Up to around 300 miles of electric range

Depending on specification, the Volvo EX30 Cargo offers an electric driving range approaching 300 miles.

For businesses primarily completing local and regional journeys, that could allow the vehicle to complete an entire working day before needing to recharge.

Businesses with access to workplace charging could potentially recharge their vehicles overnight and start each morning with a full battery, reducing the need to rely on public charging during the working day.

As with any electric vehicle, real-world range will vary depending on factors including temperature, driving style, speed, load and road conditions.

The EX30 Cargo is available with different powertrain options, including the P3 with 150hp and P5 with 272hp, depending on the chosen model and specification.

A commercial vehicle with passenger-car comfort

One of the biggest selling points of the Volvo EX30 Cargo is likely to be the driving environment.

Instead of a more traditional van interior, the cabin retains much of the technology and comfort found in the EX30 SUV.

Standard equipment includes Volvo Safe Space Technology, Google Automotive Services, Adaptive Cruise Control, front and rear Park Assist, a rear-view camera, wireless smartphone connectivity, automatic LED headlights and an efficient heat pump.

Higher specifications add equipment such as Pilot Assist, Digital Key Plus, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, two-zone climate control, wireless phone charging and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.

For drivers spending a large proportion of their working day behind the wheel, that additional comfort could be a significant benefit.

It also makes the EX30 Cargo an interesting proposition for businesses looking for a commercial vehicle that can comfortably double as an everyday vehicle.

Volvo EX30 Cargo or EX30 Cross Country Cargo?

Volvo offers two commercial versions of the EX30.

Alongside the standard Volvo EX30 Cargo is the EX30 Cross Country Cargo, which provides increased ground clearance and a slightly more rugged approach.

That could make the Cross Country version more suitable for businesses that regularly work on poorer road surfaces, rural locations or sites where additional ground clearance is useful.

The conversion can also be applied to both newly ordered vehicles and suitable existing Model Year 2026 and Model Year 2027 stock.

Available trim levels include Core, Plus and Cross Country Plus, giving businesses a choice of specification depending on their requirements.

Does the Volvo EX30 Cargo make sense for businesses?

The EX30 Cargo sits in an unusual position within the commercial vehicle market, and that is arguably what makes it interesting.

Its 390kg maximum payload means it will not suit every business, particularly those that regularly carry heavy tools, materials or large amounts of equipment.

However, there are plenty of companies where a traditional van is simply unnecessary.

For those businesses, the EX30 Cargo combines useful carrying capacity with the smaller footprint, comfort and technology of a premium electric car.

The addition of the £2,500 Zero Emission Van Grant strengthens the proposition further by reducing the initial purchase price and helping lower one of the barriers businesses can face when moving to electric vehicles.
