UK charging network | Current
The UK's public EV charging network has reached a significant milestone, with more than 120,000 public charge pointsnow available nationwide. This includes over 28,000 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers, making long-distance travel and everyday charging increasingly convenient for both private motorists and business fleets.
As more drivers make the switch to electric vehicles, continued investment in charging infrastructure is helping to improve accessibility and support the UK's transition towards zero-emission transport.
Why the growth of chargers needs to increase
While the charging network is expanding, the latest BVRLA Road to Zero Report 2026 highlights that infrastructure must continue to grow at a faster pace to meet future demand.
To remain on track for the UK's 2030 targets, approximately 48,000 new public chargers will need to be installed each year. In comparison, around 13,200 chargers were installed during 2025, demonstrating that further investment and deployment will be essential as EV ownership continues to rise.
Expanding the charging network will help reduce waiting times, improve accessibility and provide greater confidence for those considering an electric vehicle.
Regional Coverage
Although charging infrastructure is growing across the UK, availability remains uneven. London and the South East continue to have the highest concentration of public chargers, while many other regions have fewer charging options.
Improving regional coverage will be important to ensure drivers and businesses across the country can benefit from convenient access to charging, regardless of where they live or operate.
What this means for businesses and drivers
For businesses, an expanding charging network makes it easier to transition company cars and fleets to electric vehicles. Improved infrastructure supports employee charging, business travel and operational efficiency while helping organisations work towards their sustainability goals.
For personal drivers, greater charger availability provides more flexibility for commuting, long-distance journeys and everyday driving. As the network continues to grow, concerns around charging convenience and range are expected to reduce, making EV ownership increasingly practical.
How improved infrastructure supports EV adoption
Reliable and accessible charging infrastructure is one of the biggest factors influencing electric vehicle adoption. As the network expands, it becomes easier for both businesses and individuals to confidently choose an electric vehicle.
Combined with continued improvements in vehicle range, technology and charging speeds, investment in public charging infrastructure will play a key role in supporting the UK's transition to cleaner, more sustainable transport over the coming years.
