Tesla Self Driving Technology Approved in Europe for the First Time

Vehicle Reviews & News

Tesla has received regulatory approval to introduce its self driving technology in the Netherlands, marking the first time its supervised Full Self Driving system will be available on customer vehicles in Europe. This milestone allows Tesla vehicles to navigate a wide range of driving scenarios with active driver supervision, bringing Europe a step closer to more advanced driver assistance systems on public roads.

How Tesla’s Self Driving Technology Works

Tesla’s system is designed to handle complex driving environments, including city streets, intersections and lane changes. Unlike traditional systems that rely on fixed rules, Tesla uses an end to end neural network trained on real world driving data.

The technology primarily relies on external cameras and artificial intelligence, processing information directly on the vehicle’s onboard computer. Tesla states that this ensures both fast response times and strong privacy protection, as data is analysed locally rather than externally.

With over 14 billion kilometres driven globally using the system, Tesla claims its vehicles are up to seven times less likely to be involved in a collision per kilometre compared to manual driving when the feature is engaged.

Continuous Learning Through Data

A key part of Tesla’s approach is fleet learning. The global Tesla fleet contributes vast amounts of anonymised driving data equivalent to more than 500 years of driving every day.

This allows the system to continuously improve via over the air updates, learning how to handle rare and complex situations and delivering a smoother, more natural driving experience over time.

Important Driver Responsibility Remains

Despite its capabilities, Tesla’s system is not fully autonomous. Drivers must remain attentive and responsible at all times while using the technology. It is classified as a supervised driving system rather than true self driving.

What About the UK?

While the approval currently applies to the Netherlands, the UK is actively progressing towards introducing self-driving technology. The Department for Transport has already begun shaping a regulatory framework, with further consultation expected in 2026 and full regulations potentially in place by 2027.

With UK regulations often closely aligned to European standards, there is strong potential for Tesla’s self-driving technology to arrive in the UK in the near future, but we aren't sure! We  to you with another review if they release the technology in the UK.

The Bigger Picture

Tesla’s approval in Europe represents a significant step forward for autonomous driving technology. As more manufacturers and technology companies invest in this space, including projects from companies like Waymo and Uber, the shift towards more automated mobility continues to accelerate.

For now, Tesla’s rollout in the Netherlands will begin via over the air updates, with further European approvals expected to follow.
