Lexus is introducing a new steer-by-wire system on its RZ electric SUV, and it’s a big shift in how the car is designed to feel from behind the wheel. In simple terms, it replaces the usual mechanical steering connection with an electronic system, with Lexus aiming for quicker, cleaner steering responses and a calmer experience on the road.
Steer-by-wire explained
In a traditional car, turning the steering wheel is mechanically linked to the front wheels. With steer-by-wire, your steering input is sent electronically to the steering system, which then turns the front wheels. Lexus also says it has built in safeguards, including a back-up system designed to maintain steering performance if a fault is detected.
A different steering wheel and less arm-twisting
Because the system is electronic, Lexus can reduce how much you need to turn the wheel. The RZ uses a compact, aircraft-style steering wheel shape rather than a full circular rim, and Lexus claims lock-to-lock is just plus or minus 200 degrees.
The benefit is clear on paper: less hand-over-hand shuffling when manoeuvring, plus a more open view ahead and a little more space around your legs. Lexus says this supports its Tazuna cockpit layout, designed to keep your eyes on the road with key controls positioned for quick, simple use.
Steering that adapts to speed
Lexus says the steering ratio changes depending on how fast you’re travelling:
- At low speeds, the steering is set up to make parking and tight turns easier.
- At medium speeds, it’s intended to feel responsive on twistier roads.
- At higher speeds, the system is designed to add stability for motorway driving.
If it delivers in the real world, this should help the RZ feel lighter around town while still feeling planted and reassuring at speed.
Keeping the drive feeling natural
A common concern with steer-by-wire is whether it feels “normal”. Lexus says the system reduces unwanted vibration and harsh kickback through the wheel, while still feeding useful information back to the driver so it doesn’t feel detached.
How it ties in with DIRECT4 all-wheel drive
Lexus also highlights how steer-by-wire works alongside its DIRECT4 electric all-wheel drive system, with the goal of making the car’s responses feel more consistent and predictable as conditions change.
Which Lexus RZ models get it?
According to Lexus, steer-by-wire is available now and fitted as standard on the RZ 550e F Sport and RZ 550e F Sport Takumi, paired with DIRECT4 all-wheel drive and Lexus’ Interactive Manual Drive feature.
