BMW has unveiled the new all-electric i3, a sleek Neue Klasse saloon promising up to 560 miles of range, rapid charging and a fresh take on the 3 Series formula. Here’s what UK drivers need to know.

BMW has taken the wraps off the new all-electric i3, and this is a big one.

Not just because of the badge, but because BMW is positioning it as the next chapter in the story of the 3 Series. In simple terms, this looks like BMW’s attempt to bring its most important saloon into the electric age without losing the sharp handling, premium feel and everyday usability that made the 3 Series such a success in the first place.

The headline figure is the claimed range. BMW says the new i3 can travel up to 560 miles on a single charge under the WLTP test cycle, which would put it right at the sharp end of the electric car market. It will also support 400kW DC rapid charging on its new 800-volt architecture, with BMW claiming up to 249 miles of range can be added in just 10 minutes at the right charger.

That alone is enough to make people pay attention, but BMW is clearly trying to sell more than just a big battery number here.

BMW wants this to feel like a proper BMW

The new i3 will launch first as the BMW i3 50 xDrive, using two electric motors to produce a combined 469hp and 645Nm of torque. BMW says the car has been engineered to deliver the kind of precise, assured handling drivers expect from the brand, helped by a new control system called Heart of Joy, which manages key driving functions and is said to react far faster than previous systems.

That may sound technical, but the point is simple. BMW knows buyers in this part of the market do not just want a fast electric car. They want one that still feels rewarding to drive.

A new look, but still recognisably 3 Series

Visually, BMW says the i3 has been designed as a modern reinterpretation of the 3 Series formula. It gets a fresh Neue Klasse design language, a new 2.5-box silhouette, a shark-nose front end, a reworked kidney grille and a cleaner, more reduced overall shape. It is still a saloon, still clearly a BMW, but with a much more futuristic edge than today’s model.

Inside, the cabin is built around BMW Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X, with a driver-focused layout that includes a full-width projected display area, a large central screen and a new multifunction steering wheel. BMW is also making a point of using more sustainable materials in the cabin, including seat fabrics made from 100 per cent recycled polyester.

Faster charging, smarter tech, more focus on sustainability

Under the skin, the i3 brings in BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. Along with quicker charging and better energy density, BMW says this new set-up improves range and efficiency by around 30 per cent compared with the previous generation. Bidirectional charging will also be part of the package, meaning the car’s battery can be used to power external devices in certain situations.

BMW is also leaning heavily into the sustainability story. The company says the new i3 has been developed with a focus on reducing emissions across its full life cycle, from supply chain to production and use. It also says the car will be built at Plant Munich, which is being transformed for the Neue Klasse era and will eventually produce fully electric vehicles only.

When is the BMW i3 coming to the UK?

Production of the new BMW i3 is due to begin in August 2026, with first UK customer deliveries expected in autumn 2026. BMW has not yet confirmed UK pricing or the full specification line-up, so there is still more to come before order books properly take shape.

Why this matters

The electric car market is full of SUVs, so there is something refreshing about BMW going big on an electric saloon that is meant to sit so close to the heart of the brand.

If BMW can deliver on the promised range, charging speed and driving dynamics, the new i3 could become one of the most important premium EV launches of the next 12 months. For drivers who still want a sleek executive car rather than another high-riding crossover, that will be very welcome news.

Rivervale’s take

On paper, this looks like one of the most exciting premium EV launches we’ve seen in a while. The range claim is huge, the charging speeds are right up there with the best, and BMW seems keen to reassure loyal 3 Series drivers that going electric does not have to mean giving up the things they love about a BMW.

Pricing will be key, of course, and we will be watching closely for full UK specs and leasing details as they are announced.
