Bottegafuoriserie shows why personal specification still matters

Vehicle Reviews & News
Alfa Romeo and Maserati’s bespoke programme serves a rarefied market, but the importance of choosing a specification carefully is relevant to everyday buyers too.

Alfa Romeo and Maserati are celebrating the first anniversary of Bottegafuoriserie, their initiative spanning bespoke cars, personalisation, heritage and motorsport. It is a world a long way from an ordinary company-car quotation, but I think it raises a useful point for anyone choosing a vehicle: the specification deserves proper thought.

The programme’s creations include individual interpretations of the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale and bespoke Maserati projects. At that level, the owner can be closely involved in the result. Most buyers have a much shorter options list, although the decisions on it can still affect how happy they are with the car over several years.

Start with what you will use

When comparing versions of a car, I would first identify the equipment that improves your normal journeys. Think about the seating position, access and the controls you will use every day. A feature that makes a routine task easier may be worth more to you than something impressive that you rarely touch.

I would then separate those requirements from the options you simply like. There is room for both. Wanting a particular colour or interior finish is a valid preference, and it is better to recognise that honestly than invent a practical justification for every choice.

Personal taste needs a clear budget

The attraction of a bespoke car is that somebody has made deliberate decisions about it. For a lease customer, I would apply that same care to the available specification while keeping the overall quotation in view. Ask for the exact version and chosen options to be reflected in the figures you compare.

A brochure starting price will not answer what your selected car costs under a particular agreement. Nor should you assume that a desirable option will add the same amount to every leasing quotation. Compare like for like, read the proposal and check any change before committing.

What the brands need to preserve

From my perspective in automotive marketing, the more interesting question about the Alfa Romeo and Maserati collaboration is how each keeps its own character. Sharing expertise can be sensible, but buyers still need to recognise what attracts them to the individual brand. The finished car has to make that argument through its design and execution.

I also like the attention given to heritage when it produces a thoughtful choice rather than a badge and a familiar name. A reference to an earlier car should work visually and feel appropriate to the current one. That is something readers can judge for themselves when they look at these commissions.

For your own next vehicle, take the time to sit in the specification you are considering where possible, and ask questions about anything that is unclear. Rivervale can help you compare available leasing options, with the model, equipment and contract details set out so you know what you are choosing.
