The BMW X5 has been around since 1999, but the next generation represents considerably more than another facelift.

Due to arrive in the UK from spring 2027, the new BMW X5 adopts the latest design language and technology developed as part of BMW's Neue Klasse programme. UK customers will initially be able to choose between fully electric, plug-in hybrid and diesel powertrains, meaning BMW isn't forcing every X5 driver down the same route.

And while we're still waiting for UK pricing and final leasing details, BMW has already revealed enough to make the new X5 one of the most interesting premium SUVs heading our way.

The BMW X5 goes electric for the first time

Perhaps the biggest news is the arrival of the BMW iX5, the first fully electric production version of the X5.

The headline numbers are impressive. The BMW iX5 60 xDrive is expected to offer up to 525 miles of WLTP range, powered by a huge 141kWh usable battery and BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology. BMW is also quoting up to 460kW DC rapid charging, thanks to an 800-volt electrical architecture.

BMW says that, under the right conditions, as much as 217 miles of WLTP range could be added in just 10 minutes. The iX5 is also being prepared for bidirectional charging, potentially allowing the vehicle's battery to be used as an energy store for the home or as a mobile power source when compatible technology becomes available.

With 578hp and 805Nm of torque in iX5 60 xDrive form, it's not exactly going to be slow either. BMW currently quotes 0-62mph in around 4.6 seconds. These figures remain provisional ahead of launch.

You won't have to go fully electric

BMW hasn't forgotten X5 customers who aren't ready for an EV.

The UK range will also include the X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid, combining a six-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 489hp. BMW is targeting up to 63 miles of electric-only WLTP range, potentially allowing many everyday journeys to be completed without using the petrol engine at all.

For those covering big motorway mileages, a 313hp X5 40d xDrive diesel will also be available.

There's also an X5 M60e xDrive plug-in hybrid producing a substantial 612hp and 800Nm, capable of reaching 62mph in around 4.5 seconds according to BMW's provisional figures.

Globally, BMW has actually engineered the new X5 to accommodate five different drive technologies, including hydrogen. The UK launch line-up, however, focuses on electric, plug-in hybrid and diesel models.

A very different X5 inside

It's arguably inside where the Neue Klasse influence becomes most obvious.

Traditional BMW instruments have made way for the new BMW Panoramic iDrive system.

BMW Panoramic Vision places configurable information across the lower section of the windscreen, while a separate 3D Head-Up Display can position important driving information directly within the driver's field of vision. There's still a large central touchscreen too, using BMW Operating System X.

You can even drag selected widgets from the central display into the Panoramic Vision area, allowing the information you use most frequently to sit directly ahead of you.

Then there's the optional 14.6-inch BMW Passenger Screen. The front passenger can use it for apps, gaming and video streaming while travelling, adding another layer of entertainment without requiring the driver to share the main display.

Doors that open at a touch

Some of the smaller details might prove to be the ones people remember.

Instead of conventional protruding door handles, the new X5 introduces BMW's subtle Winglet door controls. Specify the optional automatic doors and touching the winglet can electrically open or close the door for you. They can still be operated mechanically when required.

Up front, the X5 gains a new interpretation of BMW's illuminated kidney grille, alongside distinctive double-X daytime running lights.

Customers will have a choice of 11 exterior colours and wheels measuring up to a sizeable 23 inches.

Even the roof has a party trick

A large two-part Panoramic Glass Sunroof comes as standard on the iX5 and covers around two square metres.

The front section can actually open, rather than simply being a fixed glass panel, and can be controlled using a button, voice command or the My BMW App.

Elsewhere, optional equipment includes ventilated and massaging front seats, Merino leather, genuine slate interior trim and an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system with Dolby Atmos.

BMW's 'Heart of Joy'

There's another Neue Klasse feature hidden beneath the surface.

The electric iX5 uses what BMW calls its Heart of Joy, a central computer responsible for coordinating areas including the powertrain and driving dynamics.

It's designed to make the different systems within the car work together far more quickly, with BMW promising greater precision, smoother responses and a more natural driving experience.

Adaptive suspension will be standard across the X5 range, while some versions can also be equipped with air suspension and Integral Active Steering, allowing the rear wheels to turn slightly to improve manoeuvrability.

It can even change lanes when you look in the mirror

BMW's latest driver assistance technology is coming to the X5 too.

Optional Motorway Assistant can provide hands-free Level 2 assistance on suitable roads at speeds of up to 81mph where legally permitted, although the driver must remain attentive and responsible for the vehicle.

Perhaps more interestingly, when the car suggests a lane change, the driver can confirm it by deliberately looking into the relevant exterior mirror.

Parking Assistant Professional can also allow the X5 to be manoeuvred remotely from a compatible smartphone through the My BMW App, which could prove rather useful given the X5 is almost five metres long.
